Drain Rescue 101 – How to unclog your sink without doing more damage.

Save yourself a lot of time, effort, stress and money by reading this blog.

To safely unclog a blocked sink, follow these step-by-step instructions, and be aware of what you should avoid doing. So many people get themselves deeper and deeper into ever-growing issues by tackling the job incorrectly to start with. So if Alpha Drain Unblocking can help by saving you a lot of time, effort, stress and money, then that’s great. If not, we are but a call, text or email away.

Right, firstly, the “to-do” list:

1. Boiling Water:

   - Start by pouring a kettle of boiling water down the drain. This can sometimes dissolve grease or soap that might be causing the blockage.

2. Plunger:

   - If boiling water doesn’t work, use a plunger. Place it over the drain and create a seal, then plunge up and down vigorously several times. This can help dislodge the blockage.

3. Baking Soda and Vinegar:

   - Pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar. The mixture will fizz and help break down the blockage. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then flush with hot water. Try the plunger again.

4. Plumbing Snake or Drain Auger:

   - If the blockage persists, use a plumbing snake if you have one. Insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle to push it through the blockage. Once you feel resistance, continue turning to break through or hook onto the blockage, then pull it out.

5. Clean the P-trap:

   - If none of the above methods work, place a bucket under the P-trap (the U-shaped pipe under the sink) and unscrew it carefully. Check for any clogs in the trap and clean it out.

6. Chemical Drain Cleaners:

   - As a last resort, you can use chemical drain cleaners. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, as these chemicals can be hazardous. Look for environmentally friendly options where possible.

7. You’ve still got a bock!?

- Contact Alpha Drain Unblocking. Sounds like you need to speak to an expert!

Probably just as important as all the “to-do” items we’ve just covered, are the “what not to do” pointers we’ll look at now.

Most Common Things to Avoid:

1. Avoid Overusing Chemical Drain Cleaners:

   - These can damage your pipes over time, especially if used repeatedly. They are also harmful to the environment and can be dangerous if not handled properly.

2. Don’t Force a Plunger:

   - If plunging isn’t working, don’t force it. This could damage the seals or push the blockage further down the pipe.

3. Don’t Use Harsh Tools:

   - Avoid using makeshift tools like wire hangers. These can scratch or damage your pipes, leading to leaks or further issues.

4. Don’t Ignore Persistent Clogs:

   - If your sink repeatedly clogs, it may be a sign of a bigger problem within your plumbing system. Consider calling a professional plumber to inspect the issue.

5. Avoid Pouring Grease Down the Drain:

   - Grease solidifies as it cools, leading to blockages. Always dispose of grease in the bin, not down the sink.

Drain Rescue 101: By following these steps and avoiding the common pitfalls, you should, in the majority of cases, be able to unclog your sink or drain without causing further problems, damage or expense.
